How To Increase Your Instagram Engagement and Follower Count: Part Deux

In order to be successful and reach the right people on Instagram, you have to use the correct hashtags combined with posting at the right moment for optimal reach.  It’s a cyclical process: higher engagement leads to more visibility, which leads to higher engagement, which leads to more visibility… and it all starts with when you post on Instagram.

In the first post, we went over a few various ways to increase IG engagement; but I want to take a quick moment and discuss one more way that I hadn’t yet covered.

Schedule Instagram Posts for When Your Audience Is Most Active

This should be a no-brainer, however, many people are used to posting whenever. Stop doing that. Use your Analytics, they are there for a reason. For instance, I will usually post between 6-8:30 am, 3 pm or between 6-9pm. This is when most of my followers are using the app.

One of the best ways to generate a ton of engagement is to schedule your Instagram posts for. The Instagram algorithm gives posts with higher engagement more priority, meaning that the more likes and comments your post receives, the more people will see your post.

If you post when your audience is most active on Instagram, you’re more likely to drive engagement on that post. That engagement will translate into Instagram bumping your post higher up on users’ feeds, which, in turn, will result in even more engagement on your post.

With Instagram hashtags, you are allowed to use up to 30 tags per post. The best way to do this is to NOT use it in the caption, however, but by posting in the first comment. This will keep your caption from looking too spammy.

I keep around 10-12 categories of hashtags stored in iNotes and use the appropriate ones based on the type of post. When using hashtags as a blogger, it’s also important to tag any brands you may be working with and to always include an #ad or #sponsored if you’re being paid for the post.

1. Why You Should Use Instagram Hashtags

For starters, it’s the only way to be seen. Secondly, it is the best way to grow your account. Using the right hashtags as mentioned earlier, will ensure your brand reaches a specific targeted audience. It’s a great way to attract new followers and increase engagement.

2. How to Determine Which Hashtags Are Best For Your Account

It’s important to note that just because you use a popular generic hashtag like #mom, which may show up in 147,000,000 other posts, that doesn’t mean that you will end up with even 50 likes off of it. You have to be strategic when choosing hashtags. Try narrowing it down some. While using #mom because it is a popular hashtag may earn you a few likes, using a tag such as #southernmom or #engineermom (if you are one), will do much better for your growth in the long run.

Try to refrain from using the most popular hashtags on Instagram. Instead, go for ones specific to your audience and will allow for more engagement. This is where community-based tags come in handy.

Another great thing way to find out which tags are great for you to use is to see what your competition is using. Basically, I am telling you to kind of stalk their post. This will help you see which tags provide the most engagement. There may be a few great hashtags out there that you haven’t thought of that can really help boost your profile more.
