It’s so easy to get caught up in wanting the perfect Instagram feed:
Light and Airy
Bright and White
Bold and Colorful
Did you know that the first 6-9 photos on your feed will cause a person to determine whether or not they want to follow you? This means that your feed needed to be cohesive and curated at all times.
Especially if you are a blogger or using Instagram for your business.
I am all about being intentional in everything that I do. This means everything I post is carefully thought out. While there are people who don’t enjoy the highly curated threads, if we can be honest, this is what a majority of brands are looking for. They want people to represent them that put work and care into what they do.
I want to show you what my Instagram feed looked like when I first started:
While this doesn’t look too terribly bad, I can honestly say that the bold, colorful aesthetic was what I wanted to go for as far as branding.
This is why it is important to be intentional with what you post.
Now let me show you a period that I went through where I just posted whatever, whenever, without much thought in place.
During this time, I never really cared what I posted, how often I posted, or what it looked like. because of that, I lost nearly 500 followers. Yes, you read that correctly, around 500 people unfollowed me. Crazy right? There is so much wrong here, that I really don’t need to explain it all, because well, you can see it for yourself.
Now I want to show you want intentional posting looks like:
As you can, once I became more “intentional” with my posting, my feed started to look a lot better. There are several are several reasons as to why you may lose followers on IG, but your aesthetic is one thing you don’t want them to unfollow you for.
If you are looking to optimize your IG and make it so that you gain followers instead of losing them, then keep reading.
No Clear Theme
Consistency is key. If your profile is all over the place, this can (and more than likely will), cause users to click away from your profile. Instagram is one of the many places where a first impression means everything. Make sure that you stick with one theme for your profile. If you want light and airy; go for it. If you prefer bold and bright, do it. However, just make sure that you are consistent.
They are great, but you have to know how to use them. If you are going to use filters, make sure that you are using the same ones for every photo. This adds to keeping the consistency that was mentioned earlier.
The best thing to do with your photos is to keep them clean looking. Make sure that in your photos there is not too much background noise. Also, if you are going to use editing apps such as Snapseed or VSCO, don’t over edit them. Meaning do not wash them out, don’t over saturate them. Less is more.
Less is perfect.
Text on Photos
As previously mentioned, you want to make sure your photos have a clean look. This means no text (save that for Pinterest). Of course, there are exceptions to this. If you are a photographer, of course, I would highly recommend watermarking your photos. However, for all creatives, steering away from bold text across the photos is best. This can be very overwhelming to the senses and cause potential followers to shy away.
Not Interacting With Your Followers
If you want to completely kill your engagement and followers, then not interacting is probably the way to go.
But I am guessing since you are reading this, it is safe to assume that you aren’t doing that. For bloggers, businesses, and other creatives, engagement should be the top priority for them on Instagram. This means going out of your way to interact with other accounts, not only those that follow you and that you follow but others as well.
When people comment on your photos, be sure to comment back. You want to make sure you and your brand have a strong presence on Instagram and the only sure-fire way of doing this is to make sure that you are actively engaging with others.
