Air travel can be expensive if you don’t play your cards right. Knowing when and where to book can be the difference in saving a few bucks to saving a few hundred bucks. Even more, if you have a large family you are traveling with.

Vacationing shouldn’t only be reserved for those who are well-off, likewise, neither should be able to fly. Here are six ways that you can save on you next flight.

1. Choose the right platform

Priceline, Skyscanner, Expedia, Kayak can all be great sources for finding cheap flights. However which one is the cheapest?

2. Book your tickets at the right time

If you’re a planner like I am, then when you know you are headed on a trip, the first thing that crosses your mind is to book your tickets.

While there is nothing wrong with this, it’s important to know which days you should book your tickets on. Mondays and Fridays are the absolute worst days to book on. These are usually the days where everyone is coming or going.

If you are going to book try aiming for a Tuesday or Wednesday. From my experience, this has offered me the best deal on flights. I try to book as far out as possible as well, last minute trips are great, but airlines are notorious for jacking up prices because they know people will pay it.

3. Search in private

You are going to think I am crazy for this. But I learned this tip a while back. Because sites can track what you have been looking up (through your cookies), they will often charge you a higher rate.

Try using Google’s Incognito Window on Chrome to search for your tickets.

4. Subscribe to their email list

If you are looking for a deal from anywhere, it’s always a great idea to sign up for a companies email list. They will often email deals that are only available to their subscribers.

5. Fly cheaper airlines

Yeah I know, this can suck; especially if you get the wrong cheap one (eh hem Spirit). But sadly, they often offer the absolute best pricing. Yes this is and you get what you pay for type of scenario, but you can also fly without being charged an arm, leg and your first born.

The downside to this is watching out for all of the fees associated. They will nickel and dime the hell out of you.
